To combat the gloomy, frigid weather, many seek winter vacations to beach resorts or tropical islands. However, the crunch in the economy hasn’t made traveling as affordable as it once was. <itunes:summary>This week’s episode of Millionaire or Bust was recorded after a missed week. I have to apologize because I take my responsibility to my listeners to get a show out weekly, very seriously. Unfortunately, the trip to Las Vegas for BlogWorld proved too much for me as far as getting this show out on top of everything else I had to do that week. But I’m back in the saddle!
Here are today’s segments and the associated articles and links:
By the Numbers

Dow: Gained 107 points over the past two weeks.
Oil: Up $7.77/barrel from $72.26 to $80.03 in the past two weeks.
Gas: Gained 18.9 cents/gallon over the past two weeks going from $2.482/gallon to $2.671.
Bank Failures:We had 8 bank failures over the past two weeks to bring us all the way up to 106. And here is missing bank failure #98.

Tax & Retirement Investment News:

IRS said in a statement that the maximum contribution limits for your 401(k) and other retirement plans will stay the same next year as this year.

Main Topic:
This week’s main topic discussed some things Talli and I planned to do to save money while in Las Vegas and how we did against our expectations.

If you enjoy Millionaire or Bust, please head on over to iTunes and give it a nice review. If you have some feedback on how to make the show better, shoot me an email and help me improve the show. I appreciate all your comments. Thanks for listening everyone!</itunes:summary>

Then we focused on a couple stories around housing & saving money. But first, we discussed our trip a little and how we saved a bit of money with a few choices we made.
Then we launched right into the news summary:

6 bank failures (25 last year)
Gas prices are up 14% this year
The Dow is down 775.53, or 8.8%
The S&P is down 77.37, or 8.6%.
The Nasdaq is down 100.61, or 6.4%.

<itunes:summary>This is our second episode of a special two part travel edition of Millionaire or Bust. We’ll be focusing on how to plan for trips while still trying to stay on track with your goals of building wealth. We’ll give you tips on how to save money or just have the ability to have a better trip with the money you do have.
In this show, we dicsuss ways to budget for and save money on lodging, food, tours and admissions, souvenirs and tipping.

Some links we mentioned on the show were:

Economical Traveler by Simone di Santi of A Road Retraveled
Expedia.com
Hotels.com
frommers.com
LonelyPlanet.com
Fodors.com

We also discussed various insurances that are commonly linked with travel, some ways to save money on them and things to watch out for if you decide to opt out of them.
So, hopefully this two part series helps you plan a trip that fits your budget or is possibly a little nicer than you can normally afford for the same price. Becoming a millionaire is all about making the right choices with your money. For a lot of people, trips can be a very large part of their budget. So, that’s a good place to look at controlling costs without compromising your lifestyle.

We talk about property taxes and the opportunity that homeowners have to get theirs reduced if their house has lost value. Don’t pay any more taxes than you’re obligated to.
We discuss a bit about how rewards credit cards aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. We also talk about things to look for in a rewards card and some things to avoid.

For those that are a little more computer savvy and would like to save a couple dollars by playing, free, legal games on their computer, we give a couple ways to find them.
First Option: legaltorrents.com
Second Option: Wikipedia’s List of open source games
Personal Favorite: Battle for Wesnoth – It’s a turn based, fantasy RPG.
David shares a few tips on saving energy and as energy prices go up, more and more money, that he has been implementing around the house.
Since David has been looking into ways to be a little more efficient energy-wise around the house, we discuss an article that he found on green.yahoo.com about “vampire power.”
We discuss an article from the Monterey Herald that says that tourists are spending less time and money in Las Vegas. We discuss how that could be an opportunity for you, if you’re looking to go to Vegas.
If you don’t want to create an account for the Monterey Herald, or any other site that needs a free registration, you can try bugmenot.com. They have existing logins that you can use.
David will be heading to Vegas August 14-16 for the New Media Expo. So, if you’re going and would like to meet up, send us an email.
Finally, we wrap up the show with some feedback from Lee in Connecticut.</itunes:summary>

Gas Price Update: $4.56/gallon

Next, we discussed 10 travel tips that we’ve gathered over the many years that we’ve traveled. Talli as the member of a family that traveled extensively and David as the son of a United Airlines employee and as an ex-process consultant for Accenture.
Discount Travel Sites Mentioned:
Travelzoo – A site we use often.
Sherman’s Travel – A site we check sometimes.
Priceline – Good when you’re very flexible in travel times.
Orbitz – We always check this site, then compare the best price against that airline’s own site just in case they have a lower price there. Sometimes, they do.
Hotwire They offer a trip watcher to tell you when the price for a specific trip drops.
Gate 1 Travel – The site we use for most of our trips abroad. Look for the special deals.
Next we discuss an article entitled “Vacation where the dollar is still strong” by Sheridan Prasso of Money Magazine. We discuss the seven options that she has put forth. We’ve only visited two so far, but a lot of them sound good.
Finally we listened to some feedback from Matt from Seattle. He recommended two websites:
www.fatwallet.com – A coupon and cash back member site. During the podcast I was incorrect. It isn’t $20 of cash back accumulated to get a check. It’s actually $10.
