Medical Billing: A Work from Home Scam?

December 18th, 2010 · blog

With unemployment in the United States at 9.8% as of November and underemployment at 17.1% as of September, Americans are increasingly looking for alternative sources of income. Often those sources include work from home jobs. These are especially popular with people that have to stay home to care for children or elderly parents. The demand for these types of jobs has unfortunately resulted in unscrupulous people trying to capitalize on that demand to make a few extra bucks (sometimes hundreds or thousands of bucks) off people having a hard time finding those jobs. In fact, the United States Federal Trade Commission actually brought charges against the promoters of online medical billing opportunities.

That’s not to say that medical billing jobs are necessarily work at home scams. People can get legitimate jobs doing medical billing from home. Unfortunately, the easiest to find postings for those jobs, such as the online medical coding courses you find being offered on many job boards are often the ones most likely to be pushed by scammers. So, if you want to make some extra money doing medical billing from home or even make a career from it, you are going to have to do a lot more research. You’ll have to investigate any opportunity you find online to ensure that it is a legitimate opportunity and not one that is designed to merely sell you outdated software, bogus classes or outdated client prospect lists. For some tips on what to avoid, check out this article.

If you need some extra income or a full time job that you can do from home, things aren’t so bleak though. There are a lot more opportunities for jobs that you can do from home. You do have to be careful though because while there might be a lot more opportunities now, there are also a lot more people looking for those jobs. Plus there are a lot more people trying to separate those people from their money. So, be alert, realize that if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is and that there is no such thing as easy money. Those are age old sayings for a reason. They are all too true.
